The Hammock Dunes Bridge, completed in 1988, provides District residents with convenient access to Palm Coast and Interstate 95. With a five foot walkway separated from traffic by a concrete barrier, the bridge is often used for biking, jogging, and walking. The 65-foot high bridge also serves the more critical purpose of providing direct accessibility to areas east of the Intracoastal Waterway for emergency services vehicles and emergency evacuation route for barrier island residents.
Bridge construction was funded by revenue bonds totaling approximately $16.3 million. No tax monies were used. The bond documents require the District to collect tolls and set rates and fees sufficient to meet the financial obligations of the bonds and normal operating and maintenance expenses.
Toll Fee Charges
The current one way toll fee schedule is as follows:
- Passenger cars, pickups or vans …….…………… $2.00
- 3-axle vehicles or vehicle combination ………… $3.00
- 4-axle vehicles or vehicle combination …………… $3.50
- 5 or more axle vehicles or vehicle combinations …$5.00
The District offers a prepaid discount program (Express Card program). Frequent users of the bridge can open an Express Card account by prepaying for usage. The District credits additional funds to the users account based on the amount of prepayment. A $20.00 or more prepayment can result in lower effective toll rates. The discount program can now reduce the cost for a passenger car from $.88 to $.50 per trip effective October 1, 2012.
